I did the RedRover Responders training in Illinois in 1994, and very shortly afterwards the flood hit in Liberty, Texas. Oddly enough, I had a plane ticket to Texas because I was going on a long weekend vacation - but instead of going on vacation, I deployed to the disaster. The memories are as vivid as ever:

One of my favorite things about living in the Sacramento area is being so close to the river. There are some beautiful trails to walk, and you can see birds, deer, and squirrels year-round. Even so, my 4th of July weekend was notably full of wildlife this year. In addition to the wildlife I usually see, I got to see a family of river otters on the South Mokelumne River, plus two coyote and four beaver on the American River. Then I saw, up close and personal, eight baby opossum on my doorstep.
Summer is a much needed break for teachers, students and parents - but sometimes when the inertia of classwork ceases, so can students’ exposure to educational resources. Here are some ideas to minimize the “summer slide.”

I guess I’d grown cynical. Over the years the wrong presidential candidates were elected, vicious crime seemed to dominate the news of the nation, and in my own neighborhood a depraved cat torturer was on the loose.
