Are you ever too young to learn to be kind? The answer, as least in Judy Ramos’ first-grade classroom, is a resounding, “No!”
Ms. Ramos, who teaches first grade at a school receiving Title 1 funding in Texas, had received Kind News magazine in the past. After adding her name to our Nominate-an-Educator list, she was delighted when, thanks to generous donors who supported our recent #SpreadKindNews campaign, her class was again gifted the magazine.
After using Kind News magazine in their lessons, Ms. Ramos relayed that the students in her classroom are no strangers to kindness and compassion towards animals. They love to read the stories about Humane Hero kids doing amazing things for animals, the heartwarming rescue tales, and helpful pet care tips that are part of every issue of Kind News. But they don’t stop there.
<span style="font-weight: 400;"[Kind News] also helps students with their reading comprehension,” Ms. Ramos relays. “Recently, they were given an assignment to create an animated character and do a special report as if they were a news reporter, include an animal they learned about an animal they read about, and mention one way to be kind to their animal.”
They dove right into the challenge!
Eli, picture below, reported: “I just learned deer do not wear jackets in the winter but they do have tricks to keep them warm. I also learned deer move less to save energy. One way to be kind to this animal is by never treating it wrong and always treat it right.”
Penelope, shown below, was excited to report her new knowledge on cows: “I just learned that cows have a wide view to spot predators. I also learned that a cow cannot see colors like us. One way to be kind to this animal is by not to walk behind cows, because they will get scared and they think you’re a predator and you might also get kicked.”
Another great way the students work on their reading skills with the magazine is by reading to a pet “buddy.”
The students also use Kind News to help with their writing and grammar skills. These students went on a hunt for adjectives within the magazine, and then reused them to write their own sentences!
“We love knowing we can always make a difference in being kind to all animals!.”, Ms. Ramos said. “I can’t thank you enough for sharing Kind News with our class!’We love reading, we love animals, and we love Kind News!”
