We recently talked to Joshua Darrin, who serves on RedRover’s Board of Directors and Technology Task Force, about his experience as a board member, donor and animal advocate.
How did you first hear about RedRover?
I first heard about RedRover at a local meetup about Design Thinking. A former RedRover Chair of the Board was presenting and he mentioned RedRover. I could tell he worked RedRover into the presentation because it meant something to him.
How did you first get involved with RedRover?
At that presentation, I introduced myself to the former Chair of the Board. We chatted about the presentation and then connected on LinkedIn. One day he posted on LinkedIn that RedRover was looking for new Board members. I had been sensing for a while that it was time to bring animal rescue back into my life… I think approximately 17 seconds passed between the time I saw the post and the time I was on the RedRover website to apply!
What made you decide to get involved with RedRover?
Well, beyond the mission and the amazing programs – very simply – the organization and its people. Very rarely in my many years of startups and consulting have I come across an group with such an amazing focus, desire to innovate and intelligence to understand how to grow. Everyone gets it and everyone is moving in the same direction. It’s rare and I am not sure they completely realize the magic they have created. This is an organization to watch because great things are coming.
What is your favorite thing about being on the RedRover Board?
I love the feeling that I make a difference. RedRover has a pioneering history of breaking new ground and venturing into uncharted territory. The effectiveness of their deployments has set the standard that other organizations now measure themselves by. And now RedRover continues its innovation in so many areas like education and domestic violence. To be a part of this innovation and to know that it really touches lives is just such an honor – truly.
What does the Board do to monitor and maximize RedRover’s impact?
This is an active Board with a diverse group of members. We meet quarterly where we hear comprehensive reports regarding progress on new initiatives, existing programs and the state of the organization’s financial position. One of our quarterly meetings is almost entirely devoted to strategy and planning to help the organization keep an eye on the future. Each Board Director also sits on at least one committee with a targeted purpose. We really feel like we are partners with RedRover team all working together toward effective execution of their mission.
What would you tell people who were interested in getting involved with RedRover?
Don’t hesitate and get involved now. Jump in with everything you have and it will change your life. The added bonus – you will make a difference.
