(November 20, 2014) – Jason Burgess is raising funds for RedRover, a California-based nonprofit organization, as he participates in the Race Across America (RAAM) cycling competition.
In June 2015, Jason and his support crew will participate in RAAM, a coast-to-coast bike race from Oceanside, California, to Annapolis, Maryland. RAAM attracts elite cyclists from all over the world. Jason will compete as a solo rider, traversing 3,000+ miles and twelve states in just twelve days. Less than 300 riders have completed the solo race in RAAM’s 30 year history. Jason selected RedRover because he is well aware of the critical role RedRover plays in the lives of pet owners in crisis.
In April 2007, Jason lost his home in a devastating fire. While his family was not at home at the time, his three dogs were trapped inside. One dog perished in the fire, but two others were rescued by firefighters who administered oxygen and transported them to the hospital. Both survivors suffered from smoke inhalation and heat-related injuries, with boxer-Rottweiler-mix Claire spending several weeks in intensive care. During this difficult time, RedRover granted Claire a RedRover Relief grant, which provided critical financial support when the Burgess family needed it the most.
Now, Jason is preparing to give back. Jason, 38, works in law enforcement and lives near Philadelphia with his wife and 2 children. Jason is a strong advocate for animals and the environment. He has dedicated his law enforcement career to making the environment a safer place for people and animals alike. Jason has been participating in endurance races since 2012, and completed the RAAM qualifier in August 2014, cycling 400 miles in under 24 hours. As part of his training for RAAM, Jason will bike 8,000 miles in the next 10 months. Jason notes, “My family is my motivation. Claire was my best friend and her will to live has been an inspiration to me. I can’t think of a better way to honor her than to raise awareness for RedRover’s mission and how it helped my family.”
