$20,000 Donation Helps Survivors and Pets Escape Abuse

Sacramento, California (August 17, 2026) – Did you know that 71% of survivors have shared that an abuser had threatened, harmed, or killed their family pet? And that nearly 50% of domestic violence survivors delay leaving out of concern for their pet? Compounding that, only 20% of domestic violence shelters have pet housing programs.

RedRover®, a national animal welfare 501(c)(3) nonprofit, believes pets are family and that no one should have to leave their pet behind.

Thanks to a generous $20,000 gift from the National Football League (NFL), RedRover can continue its work helping survivors and their pets find safety from abuse and keep bonded pet families together.

Katie Campbell, RedRover’s president and CEO, said, “We are thankful for the NFL’s generous donation, and for recognizing that when people are at risk, animals are at risk too. This funding supports our efforts to keep survivors’ pets safe and together so they can begin their healing journey side by side.”

RedRover offers survivors and their pets assistance through:

  • Safe Escape grants: cover temporary pet boarding up to 45 days and basic veterinary care while a survivor is in a shelter.
  • Safe Housing grants: up to $60,000 is awarded to domestic violence, animal, and homeless shelters to create pet housing programs for those experiencing abuse and/or homelessness.
  • Don’t Forget the Pets project: with Greater Good Charities, they help domestic violence shelters, animal shelters, and homeless shelters create custom pet housing programs free of charge

The NFL is committed to addressing domestic violence, sexual assault and trafficking through partnerships with advocacy organizations and nonprofits, including RedRover, focused on prevention, healing and awareness. Through this work, the NFL seeks to help strengthen community-based resources and support organizations serving survivors and their pets across the country.
