SACRAMENTO, CA (August 30, 2008) – United Animal Nations (UAN) has deployed two teams of its Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) volunteers to assist the Louisiana SPCA (LA/SPCA) with animal evacuation and sheltering in anticipation of Hurricane Gustav.

EARS volunteers from around the southeastern United States arrived in New Orleans on Saturday, August 30 to help the LA/SPCA transport pets belonging to residents without personal vehicles out of the city to a temporary shelter in Shreveport, Louisiana. Another team of EARS volunteers is in the Baton Rogue area caring for animals evacuated from the LA/SPCA shelter in New Orleans. Some of these animals are from cruelty and neglect cases, and they will return to the LA/SPCA shelter after the threat from Hurricane Gustav passes.
“It is so encouraging to see the comprehensive pre-evacuation effort in place for the animals in Louisiana,” said UAN Director of Programs Karen Brown. “We are pleased that our EARS volunteers, who are specially trained to care for animals at temporary shelters during natural disasters and other crises, are able to support these efforts.”
Through its volunteer-driven Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS), UAN provides free emergency sheltering and disaster relief services for animals in communities that become overwhelmed by natural disasters or other crises. Since 1987, UAN has responded to more than 80 disasters, including deploying more than 400 volunteers to six locations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.
UAN is one of several national animal protection organizations, including American Humane Association, the ASPCA, Best Friends Animal Society, Code 3 Associates, The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare and Noah’s Wish, that have deployed emergency responders to Louisiana in preparation for Hurricane Gustav.
