United Animal Nations provides critical temporary sheltering support for rescue mission

(July 13, 2010) – United Animal Nations (UAN) is leading operations to shelter 60 dogs and 30 cats removed from Eastern Montana Humane Society (EMHS) today due to violations of the Montana animal cruelty code.

EARS volunteer Coke Conrad of West Fargo, North Dakota comforts a dog removed from a Montana animal shelter that was in violation of the state’s animal cruelty code.

UAN is assisting The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Fallon County Sheriff’s Department with the removal of the animals from the property, veterinary examinations, and temporary sheltering until the animals can be transported to rescue groups where they will be made available for adoption.

“UAN can step in to provide critical sheltering support when local authorities are faced with a large influx of animals that would normally overburden them,” said UAN Emergency Services Manager Janell Matthies, who traveled from Sacramento, California to manage the temporary shelter for the rescued animals. “We are proud to share our expertise and skills to help these animals and to support the Sheriff’s Department in its effort to enforce animal cruelty laws in Fallon County.”

Distinguished by their red shirts, volunteers with UAN’s Emergency Animal Rescue Service are specially trained to care for animals at temporary shelters after they have been rescued from cruelty and neglect situations or displaced by natural disasters. UAN has more than 3,000 active, trained volunteers in the United States and Canada.

Six UAN volunteers have traveled to Fallon County at their own expense from as far as Texas and Wisconsin to care for the animals at a temporary shelter set up specifically for this rescue by UAN and HSUS. PetSmart Charities® donated much-needed sheltering supplies for the rescued animals.

When responders arrived at EMHS, they found large numbers of dogs and cats living in filthy, cramped pens and crates. Many of the animals were housed for long periods of time in unsafe and unsanitary enclosures. Some of the animals were suffering from skin and parasite infections.

Founded in 1987, United Animal Nations (UAN) focuses on bringing animals out of crisis and strengthening the bond between people and animals through a variety of programs, including emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and education. Learn more at www.uan.org.
