SANTA BARBARA, CA (May 8, 2009) – Today volunteers with Sacramento-based United Animal Nations (UAN) began caring for hundreds of pets being displaced by the Jesusita Fire.

Volunteers with UAN’s Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) are caring for hundreds of animals who, with their owners, were forced from their homes by a massive wildfire.

Volunteers with UAN’s Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS)  are traveling to Santa Barbara  from throughout California to help the Santa Barbara Humane Society care for evacuated animals at a temporary emergency animal shelter. UAN will deploy 10 EARS volunteers per day to help with the emergency sheltering operation.

UAN has more than 700 EARS volunteers in California  who are specially trained to provide emergency sheltering for animals when a crisis strikes. UAN is deploying EARS volunteers to Santa Barbara at the request of the Santa Barbara Humane Society, which has been sheltering the evacuated animals for several days.

“Our EARS volunteers are ready, willing and able to come to Santa Barbara at a moment’s notice to help the animals in harm’s way and provide peace of mind to their families,” said UAN Emergency Service Manager Janell Matthies, who is leading the EARS team in Santa Barbara. “We hope to provide some relief to the amazing Santa Barbara Humane Society staff and volunteers, who have been working non-stop to care for the animals since this crisis began.”

With more than 4,000 trained volunteers in the United States and Canada, UAN can deploy its Emergency Animal Rescue Service when communities become overburdened by a crisis involving large numbers of animals. In its 22-year history, UAN has responded to more than 90 natural disasters and other crises, including fires in Butte County, California in 2008; flooding in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 2008; and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Founded in 1987, United Animal Nations (UAN) focuses on bringing animals out of crisis and strengthening the bond between people and animals through a variety of programs, including emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and education. Learn more at www.uan.org .
