A lifesaving legacy: Amber's Refuge

After her friend Amber was killed by a domestic abuser in 2020, Pigtopia founder Anna Davis Yancey wanted to establish a refuge for animals escaping domestic violence. Thanks to a RedRover Safe Housing grant, Anna was able to create Amber’s Refuge, a first-of-its-kind program to support the pet pigs of survivors.

Safe Housing spotlight

Pigtopia & Amber's Refuge

This summer, we had an exciting “first” in our domestic violence work: We awarded a Safe Housing grant to a pig sanctuary in Tennessee, creating a first-of-its-kind program to support the pet pigs of survivors.

Located just outside of Memphis, Pigtopia’s mission began in 2014 to provide a happy, safe place for unwanted, abandoned, and neglected pigs. But it was a tragic loss that inspired founder Anna Davis Yancey to establish a refuge for animals escaping domestic violence. In 2020, Anna’s friend Amber was killed by a domestic abuser.......

More about the program

RedRover is partnering with Unchain Marlboro, which was created by the Humane Society of Marlboro County (HSMC) to improve the quality of life for dogs who live outside in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Through targeted outreach and collaboration, the HSMC is also able to provide additional resources to pets and families in need, including: free or discounted veterinary care, pet food, microchipping, and more.

With your help, we can continue to support this vital project for dogs and families in this community.
