Anticipated Excessive Flooding May Leave Many Animals Stranded
Sacramento, CA – RedRover, a national nonprofit animal welfare organization, is in Georgetown County, South Carolina, September 25 – 28 in anticipation of historic flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) requested emergency sheltering assistance from National Animal Rescue and Sheltering Coalition (NARSC) members, and RedRover answered the call.
RedRover sent seven trained RedRover Responders volunteers to help care for animals at the emergency pet shelter in Georgetown County. With historic flooding predictions, we anticipate animals being rescued by the ASPCA, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources teams (DNR), and Urban Search and Rescue teams. RedRover Responders volunteers are traveling from across the East Coast to assist.
“We are committed to caring for animals caught in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence,” said RedRover Director of Field Services, Beth Gammie. “RedRover Responders are always eager to lend a hand and offer help to animals and their people when they need it most.”
Distinguished by their red shirts, RedRover Responders volunteers are specially trained to care for and shelter large numbers of animals after they have been rescued from cruelty and neglect cases or natural disasters. The volunteers provide the workforce which enables communities to address their animal needs swiftly and efficiently.
With more than 4,000 trained volunteers in the United States and Canada, RedRover can deploy quickly when communities become overburdened by a crisis involving large numbers of animals. In its 31-year history, RedRover has responded to 190 natural disasters and other crises nationwide including Hurricanes Irma, Harvey, Katrina, Fran, Hugo and many more.
