Local Humane Hero Featured in Kind News magazine

Murfreesboro, Tennessee (September 6, 2023) – Local Murfreesboro child, Reed Peachy, is featured as the Humane Hero in the September/October issue of Kind News™, a children’s magazine published by RedRover, a national animal welfare nonprofit based in Sacramento, California.

Reed started volunteering at the age of 10 through Beta Club, a group of student leaders who serve others in the community. He wanted to help animals because he said it could “help [him] be a better person.”

Finding a good cause was easy. His cat, Carrot (who he named after the shape of his tail) was rescued as a tiny kitten by the director of the Beesley Animal Foundation, close to where Reed lives in Tennessee. “He became part of the family right away,” he says.

Reed works on Beesley’s Animal Foundation outreach team to help pets get the food they need. He takes large bags of dog and cat food and separates them into smaller two-pound bags where they are shared throughout the community to food banks, churches, and senior centers.

Beesley Animal Foundation, where Reed volunteers, raises money to bring Kind News magazine to thousands of children every year!

When asked what advice Reed would give to other young people who want to be kind to animals, he shared, “Volunteering at an animal shelter or clinic can give kids an opportunity to help animals. Once you’ve done it, it feels really good to help.”

On clinic surgery days, once Reed is done packing bags of food, he’ll wander over for a visit to the cat room. His reward is seeing the cats. He says, “A lot of them will meow at me and rub against the cage.”

 RedRover Interim President Karly Noel said, “Reed is the epitome of kindness! We hope his story inspires other youth to find ways to give back to their communities.”

Kind News uses articles and short features to highlight issues affecting animals and provides tips for understanding animal behavior and caring for pets. Each issue features a young Humane Hero, game or activity, MUTTS comic strip, Critter Clues, and much more.

When Reed grows up he still wants to continue to help people, but more directly, “I want to be a Cardiologist or a Palliative Care Physician.”
