Excessive Flooding May Leave More Animals Stranded
Tulsa, Oklahoma, (May 31, 2019) – RedRover, a national nonprofit animal welfare organization, is in Tulsa, Oklahoma, May 31-June 8 to provide daily care and comfort for more than 150 pets of flood evacuees, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and a hamster. The Humane Society of Tulsa and Tulsa County Humane Emergency Animal Response Team (HEART) asked for emergency sheltering assistance, and RedRover answered the call.
RedRover sent 10 trained RedRover Responders volunteers to help care for animals at the emergency pet shelter at the Expo Square Pavilion. With historic flooding occurring — and more predicted — there may be additional animals evacuated and brought to the Pavilion. RedRover Responders volunteers are traveling from across Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Alabama to assist.
“We are committed to caring for animals caught in the aftermath of these floods,” said RedRover Director of Field Services, Beth Gammie. “RedRover Responders are always eager to lend a hand and help animals and their people when they need it most.”
Distinguished by their red shirts, RedRover Responders volunteers are specially trained to care for and shelter large numbers of animals after they have been rescued from cruelty and neglect cases or natural disasters. The volunteers provide the workforce which enables communities to address their animal needs swiftly and efficiently.
With more than 4,000 trained volunteers in the United States and Canada, RedRover can deploy its volunteers quickly when communities become overburdened by a crisis involving large numbers of animals. In its 31-year history, RedRover has responded to 200 natural disasters and other crises nationwide including the Moore, Oklahoma tornado; Hurricanes Michael, Irma, Harvey, Katrina, and many more.
