Staff Supporting Shelter Acting As Transport Hub For Adoptable Animals

Escambia County, Florida – (October 16, 2018) RedRover is on the ground to help the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) provide daily care and comfort for 400+ adoptable animals looking for their forever homes. The HSUS asked RedRover to assist in providing support at the Escambia County Animal Shelter. This shelter is serving as a transport hub for moving unowned, adoptable animals out of the communities hardest hit by Hurricane Michael. This makes space in local shelters to receive animals displaced by the storm. By keeping storm-impacted animals in the area, owners can find these animals and be reunited more easily.

RedRover has deployed a team of RedRover Responders volunteers for six days to help the HSUS and Escambia County Animal Shelter care for these animals. The RedRover Responders volunteers are traveling from across Florida and Louisiana to assist during this crisis.

“Animal disaster response is increasingly focused on transporting out adoptable shelter animals already in the area to make room for animals displaced by the storm. We are proud to be part of that effort,” said RedRover Director of Field Services, Beth Gammie.

Distinguished by their red shirts, RedRover Responders volunteers are specially-trained to care for and shelter large numbers of animals after they have been rescued from natural disasters. Volunteers provide the workforce which enables communities to address their animal needs following a natural disaster.

With more than 4,000 trained volunteers in the United States and Canada, RedRover can deploy its volunteers quickly when communities become overburdened by a crisis involving large numbers of animals. In its 31-year history, RedRover has responded to more than 193 natural disasters and other crises, including Hurricanes Maria, Irma, Harvey, Katrina, Superstorm Sandy and many more.
