Like many people who enter the field of animal welfare, I was lucky to form a deep connection with animals from a young age. And for most of us, growing up came with its share of challenges.
When things got tough, I found comfort, understanding, and acceptance from my animal friends; whether it was the ants in our yard or my childhood dog and best friend, Angus. Angus was the sweetest, most patient, and gentle dog. He was my confidant, my first soul dog. My connection to him was so strong that I knew early on I wanted to work with animals.
I think experiencing loss at a young age led me to experience the depth of the human-animal bond. As I grew older, I became passionate about doing anything I could to preserve the human-animal bond for others.
Remembering how much Angus meant to me continues to drive me in this work. Especially during difficult times…even when the work is hard. It’s an honor to work in the RedRover Relief program, to hear people’s stories and witness the depth of their connection with their animals.
While I may be many miles away from the people I support, I often feel as though I’m right there with them, doing everything I can to help them care for their animal. Their family.
