Though we are a small team, it’s not uncommon for our RedRover Responders volunteer team’s schedule to be jam-packed, and June was no exception, with four unique deployments!
We started the month with a unique opportunity from our friends at Greater Good Charities: a chance to install a massive, specialized 8-foot-tall fence to enclose approximately 0.60 acres of habitat at Wolf Haven International, an award-winning wolf sanctuary in Tenino, Washington. Together, we created a new enclosure for a special wolf named Billie, including custom chain link fencing, an enrichment platform, and a shelter area from the elements. This was an incredibly physical, dusty, and dirty deployment, but as always, our team met challenges with humor and flexibility!
Just as we were finishing up in Washington, a separate team headed out to the Navajo Nation in Arizona for a three-day wellness, vaccine, and spay/neuter clinic with our long-time partner, The Parker Project. These weekends are busy, with multiple services being offered to hundreds of pets in a short time and in a small space. Whether it was a two-pound puppy with a broken leg or supporting pets waking up from surgery, we are always happy to be part of such an important clinic!

From there, our work on the Navajo Nation continued, but in New Mexico. A small group of folks headed back to Shiprock to reconnect with families and dogs we assisted previously through our Unchaining program. With more than 50 dogs relying on us for safe enclosures, it’s important that we provide repairs to their fencing, as well as hand out the fun stuff: new squeaky toys and enrichment items. With harsh weather and environmental conditions, the team fixed fencing holes, installed new tarps and canopies for shade, and made sure each pup had a special treat!
Before we knew it, the end of June had us traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah, to reunite with our friends at Greater Good Charities to build pet retreats at a domestic violence shelter. As our team faced scorching weather and found camaraderie despite this deployment’s challenges, this important work makes it possible for survivors of abuse, both people and furry family members, to find safety together. We wrapped up June as we started, digging holes and installing fencing, and ended the month knowing that the difference we made across four communities, with the help of supporters like you, is truly life-saving!
