Sowing Kindness in the Sunflower State

A kindness for Kansas kids! Thanks to two generous organizations, almost 2,000 children in the Sunflower State will receive Kind News™ magazine for the upcoming school year. We delved into who these sponsors are, and why they’ve chosen to incorporate Kind News into their work to support young animal lovers in their respective communities.
Finney County Humane Society is nestled in the southwest corner of Kansas in Garden City. Along with their commitment to helping the adoptable animals in their community find loving homes, and providing much-needed services for local pets, FCHS is particularly dedicated to education. And it’s woven into what they do day to day – the staff goes out of their way to find opportunities in their community to speak in classrooms, after-school programs, or businesses.
Humane education is part and parcel to that. For more than 13 years, Linda Owen, their bookkeeper, has tirelessly reached out to their local schools to ensure that they are bringing Kind News magazine to teachers and students who will make great use of the stories of young Humane Heroes, wildlife tidbits, puzzles, and pet care tips for kids. And her hard work has paid off: over the years, FCHS has brought the magazine to over 12,000 children!
Clear across the state the capitol of Tokepa, Northeast Kansas Animal Welfare Foundation is one of our newer Kind News sponsors. Between their efforts towards their other important initiatives – including their Home to Home program, which keeps pets who have lost their homes from having to wait in the shelter – NKAWF has made humane education a top priority. After connecting with our team at Humane World for Animal’s Animal Care Expo in 2025, they were inspired to create the Kind News for Kansas Classrooms grant, and launched the initiative in honor of Be Kind to Animals Week.
“Humane education is a strategic intervention that will capture the hearts and minds of kids to engage them with our cause,” President and CEO Justin Brokar wrote on behalf of the organization on their LinkedIn page. “The world needs more kindness. Planting seeds of empathy in the minds of children today will empower them as they grow into veterinarians, adoption counselors, dog trainers, and more.”
After seeing the positive response to the magazine during their first year sponsoring, NKAWF came back to support teachers with the magazine again – and this time, they quadrupled their reach!
