Purina recognized world champion gymnast, activist and author Aly Raisman at the 2025 Variety Power of Women event presented by Lifetime on Wednesday, October 29 for her unwavering advocacy and leadership on behalf of survivors of abuse.
I was honored to again join our Purple Leash Project partner, Purina, to honor Olympic medalist Aly Raisman, with this year’s “Variety Courage” award in recognition of her outspoken advocacy for survivors of abuse. As Aly shared, “for too many, home is the least safe place.” But it doesn’t have to be this way. Together, we are creating more opportunities for survivors and their pets to find safety, healing, and hope together.
“Healing is like a path without a map. It just takes time. Hope can look different to each of us, and it shows up in many forms. One source of hope for me has been my dog, Milo.”
As we’ve closed out another Domestic Violence Awareness (and Action) Month, I call on all of us to be that hope that can lead to healing for survivors and their pets: “Hope grows when communities show up…your support and help can open doors that were previously thought to be closed.” Each of us has the power to bring hope to survivors by listening and believing, by acknowledging that pets are family and that no one should have to choose between safety and a family member.
We must continue to raise awareness that a lack of pet-friendly options for survivors of domestic violence and their pets creates a barrier for survivors seeking safety. We must continue to learn, listen, and believe. We must continue to help bring hope every day.
