This year’s NOVA (National Organization for Victim Advocacy) Conference looked a little different than initially intended – they made the move from in-person to online earlier this year, but it continues to be one of the most effective awareness-raising events for us and our domestic violence (DV) programming. Not only did I present a virtual session on just how important collaboration is to creating a successful pet housing program, Collaboration: The Secret Ingredient to Housing People and Pets In Crisis, but we also engaged with 214 attendees in the virtual marketplace.
Why is attending an event like this so important? We continue to hear from organizations across the spectrum of human services delivery that they want to support people and their pets, but that they’re unsure how to take that next step. Voila! That’s where a conference like this comes in! We’re able to give attendees some of those initial next steps and make sure they know about all of the FREE technical assistance – and grant funding! – that we provide to create those pet housing programs.
So, thank you to NOVA for helping us continue to reach new audiences and create new awareness on the importance of recognizing and supporting people and their pets. We know there are many reasons that a survivor may delay leaving an abuser, but loving a pet and wanting them to be safe doesn’t need to be one of them.
Hint, hint: Stay tuned for more information on a special virtual panel that will include NOVA’s very own Claire Ponder-Selib in September! More information below.
