Sometimes the features we are born with change as we mature. They may start blending in, or they may become more exaggerated. The protruding canine teeth that made Sir Meowsworth an adorably silly-looking kitten were becoming a real pain for the now-seven-year-old big boy.
Mary adored his silly features, just one of the many things that made him so special.
“Sir Meowsworth is my only friend. He plays fetch every time I come home from work, likes playing with my mom’s old Chihuahua, adores bird watching, and loves cheese as much as I do. He is the only highlight of my day. He’s always happy to see me. I would simply be lost without him.”
Now that Sir Meowsworth was fully grown, his canine teeth were too. They only poked a little bit out of his mouth when he was a kitten, but they had grown into his gums and caused him tremendous pain every day. He cut his bottom lip on his teeth so often that some of the sores were abscessed, and he bled and drooled constantly. Mary knew it was time to see the veterinarian when he lost interest in cheese.
All four of his canine teeth would have to be removed in surgery, plus four back teeth the veterinarian found with dental disease. Mary was already struggling after her work hours were cut and her car broke down; now she feared she would be struggling to keep her best friend alive and pain-free. She went home with his antibiotics, pain medicine, and a knot in her stomach.
She knew the medications could only buy them so much time, and she could only save so much of her paychecks without missing payments. Mary started taking on odd jobs and doing yard work for neighbors to raise money for Sir Meowsworth’s dental surgery. He was almost finished with his course of antibiotics, and his surgery needed to be scheduled soon. Still, she was finding fewer opportunities to earn extra money. After receiving so much kindness from friends, family, and neighbors, Mary hoped she would find more kindness online.
She found the RedRover Relief Urgent Care grant program on a list of resources her local humane society posted on their website – kindness may as well have found her. She only needed a bit more money to pay for Sir Meowsworth’s surgery and with an Urgent Care grant, he could be just days away from having it. Because of the continued support of our FurEver Friends, we approved their grant in a matter of hours so Mary could spend those days before the surgery loving on Sir Meowsworth instead of worrying. The days after the surgery she could love on him even more knowing he was no longer in pain.
Mary appreciated the help so much, and we’re grateful that your continued support means countless more families just like her and Sir Meowsworth can find relief and hope in their moment of need. Thank you for being a FurEver Friend to the animals and making this Happy Tail possible!
