A safe escape for a family of turtles

Danielle’s* pet turtles are part of her family, so when she found herself seeking safe shelter from domestic violence, she did not have the heart to leave them behind. Sadly, one of the turtles did not survive when the abuser destroyed their reptile habitat. Danielle knew she had to get her family and her remaining turtles to safety as soon as possible. She worked with a domestic violence shelter to quickly find a boarding facility, and the shelter reached out to RedRover.
Through RedRover’s Safe Escape program, we were able to help cover the cost of 30 nights of boarding until Danielle and her family were able to relocate with their beloved turtles.
Danielle told her advocate, “If I didn’t have my turtles boarded through RedRover, they either would have stayed in a house with an extremely abusive man who had already killed one of them, or lived in my car in the middle of winter. I don’t think I could have left completely if they were still in the home. I have had these turtles since the day that they hatched, and I couldn’t imagine letting them go, or leaving them in the condition that they were in with my abuser. I’m so thankful.”
