Victims’ services professionals can enhance their work by screening for animal abuse as a common indicator and predictor of other forms of family violence. This workshop will review the “Link” between animal abuse, child maltreatment, domestic violence and elder abuse across the lifespan. Discussing animal abuse with clients opens channels of communication, builds rapport, and is an effective tool for assessment, prevention, intervention and treatment programs. Research, policy, program and public awareness initiatives will be discussed. Funding opportunities for grants to help domestic violence survivors provide care for their pets and to enable domestic violence shelters to accept pets will be presented.

(workshop to be presented by RedRover at the 2015 New Mexico Conference on The Link between Animal Abuse and Human Violence)
Date and time: Monday, September 14, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico (at the National Hispanic Cultural Center)
Up to 65 percent of domestic violence victims stay in abusive situations out of concern for their pets. In this presentation, we will discuss programs like SafePlaceforPets.org, created by RedRover, to help families with pets safely escape abusive home environments. We will learn how pets can be included in safety planning and share national resources including emergency grants for pet boarding and veterinary care and grants to fund on-site pet kennels at domestic violence shelters.
