Tonya adopted Marley, a handsome Maine Coon, as a kitten from a high-kill shelter. He quickly became an important member of the family and developed a special bond with Tonya’s 13-year-old daughter. Knowing he loved to chew on cords, Tonya was diligent about keeping them away from the curious cat. When Marley stopped eating one day, Tonya knew something was wrong. Despite her vigilance, Marley ingested some rubber tubing. She rushed him to the veterinary hospital where it was determined that Marley had an intestinal blockage and would need surgery to save his life.
Tonya’s business as a self-employed paramedic had slowed considerably over the past year and she was struggling to make ends meet for her and her daughter. Knowing she couldn’t afford the entire cost of surgery, she applied for a RedRover Relief grant for financial assistance.
We knew we had to act quickly to save Marley’s life, so we worked fast to approve a livesaving grant. We called Karen, one of our On-Call Angel donors, to see if she could help cover the cost of Marley’s surgery and we were thrilled when she responded with a “yes!” With the RedRover Relief grant, Tonya was able to get Marley into surgery right away. The rubber tubing was removed and Marley is now back at home getting lots of care and love!
In an update to RedRover, Tonya said, “Thank you so much for your generous donation to help Marley. The surgery was far more expensive than I anticipated and, without your help, I could not have saved him. You were quick to respond to his needs and your compassion and kindness was much needed by me in this time of stress. You never made me feel like he was ‘just a cat.’ I look forward to many more years with this beautiful and loving creature.”
