RedRover has received a RedRover Relief grant application for a dog in Iredell County, North Carolina that had hot motor oil poured over her body and now has severe burns as a result. Cayley, a wirey mixed-breed dog, was surrendered to the Iredell County Animal shelter with severe burns from her ears to the base of her tail, where it was discovered that her owner had poured hot motor oil over her skin to try and eradicate a mange problem.
She received emergency treatment at a nearby pet hospital, and the shelter immediately sent out an urgent plea for her rescue. S.A.F.E. Animal Haven, a local dog rescue group, responded to the urgent rescue request and committed to saving Cayley’s life.
“The story was that her owner was using an old method to treat mange and poured hot motor oil on her.” Beth Brown, S.A.F.E. Haven cofounder and president tells us. “Typically a dog like that would have been euthanized shortly after it entered the shelter but Tina, Iredell Animal Control Officer wanted to give her a chance. Cayley won her heart when she walked in the door of the shelter and gave her kisses and hugs although she was severely burned. She had open wounds, loose skin and maggots in her wounds.”

After discussing treatment at the rescue’s frequently used vet hospital, it was determined that Cayley would need ongoing veterinary care for months to come. As a small rescue group, S.A.F.E. Animal Haven turned to RedRover Relief for help with the expensive vet treatments that Cayley would require.
You can help RedRover fund Cayley’s medical treatment by visiting www.kintera.org/HelpCayley.
Cayley will need her bandages changed every 3 days as well as ongoing medication, she was diagnosed with heartworm, and the vets have determined that she will most likely need skin grafts in the future. Cayley is currently in foster care with a S.A.F.E. Animal Haven volunteer, but needs our help to pay for the momentous bills she has incurred by no fault of her own.
YOU can help Cayley by donating to the RedRover Relief fund; Cayley is safe now but the cost of her hospitalization and medical bills are over $5,000. Please visit www.kintera.org/HelpCayley to help Cayley the burned dog and others like her.
Please share Cayley’s story and together, we can help her on her road to recovery!
