Florida (February 25, 2020) – RedRover is on the ground February 23 – 29, to assist the Humane Society of the United States provide daily care and comfort to approximately 140 dogs rescued from a large-scale alleged neglect situation in North Florida. The dogs were rescued from a residential property in Dixie County, Florida. The animals were primarily found living outside, contained in hutches which were caked in feces and leaking in the rain. Some of the animals had no apparent access to food or water. The majority of the dogs were suffering from skin conditions characterized by missing fur, sores and itchy skin.
RedRover sent 18 RedRover Responders volunteers for seven days to help care for the animals. These volunteers are traveling from South Carolina, Delaware, Massachusetts, Illinois, Vermont, California, Indiana, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida to assist during this crisis.
The assistance of the Humane Society of the United States was requested by the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office after concerns were raised about the welfare of animals on the property.
“We will diligently care for these poor animals to help them on the road to recovery,” said Beth Gammie, RedRover Director of Field Services. “It’s crucial to provide that extra TLC, beyond making sure that just their basic needs are met, to help these dogs to learn how to trust again so they can eventually find a loving home.”
Distinguished by their red shirts, RedRover Responders volunteers are specially trained to care for and shelter large numbers of animals after they have been rescued from cruelty and neglect cases or natural disasters. The volunteers provide a skilled and compassionate workforce which enables a jurisdiction to address animal cruelty and neglect in their community.
With more than 4,000 trained volunteers in the United States and Canada, RedRover can deploy its volunteers quickly when communities become overburdened by a crisis involving large numbers of animals.
