Grants Give Safe Haven to Defenseless Pets

Sacramento, CA (September 8, 2021) – RedRover is excited to announce they’re tripling funding for their Safe Housing grants – from $20,000 per grant to now a maximum of $60,000 per grant! These grants enable nonprofit domestic violence shelters and animal organizations many options to care for animal victims of abuse.

Funding may be used to build or renovate spaces dedicated to housing survivors’ pets, create a foster program to care for survivors’ pets, pay for temporary boarding for survivors’ pets, or a combination of services that will best serve the community. Grant funds may also be used for routine veterinary care, emergency veterinary care, and pet deposits.

RedRover President and CEO Nicole Forsyth said, “We know there is no one size fits all approach when it comes to housing the pets of domestic violence survivors. By expanding our grants to include animal shelters and now TRIPLING our grant size, we hope that more shelters apply so we can help more survivors and their pets escape abuse, together.”

Since 2012, RedRover has awarded 151 grants to shelters in 44 states, totaling more than $1.7 million and equaling more than 387,200 safe nights for pets. Additionally, Safe Housing grants have created the first pet-friendly domestic violence shelter in nine states.

According to research conducted by Dr. Frank Ascione, as many as 71 percent of pet-owning women entering domestic violence shelters report their abuser injured, killed, or threatened family pets for revenge or psychological control. Additionally, up to 48 percent of domestic violence victims reported delaying leaving their abusers because they feared what would happen to their pets.

Deadlines to apply for Safe Housing grants are May 15 and October 15 each year. To learn more, visit: redrover.org/SafeHousing.
