SACRAMENTO, CA (March 1, 2007) – United Animal Nations (UAN) is pleased to welcome Diann Wellman, a Red Cross-certified pet first aid and CPR instructor from Hartford City, Indiana, as the new North Central Regional Director for its Emergency Animal Rescue Service  (EARS).

As EARS North Central Regional Director, a volunteer position, Wellman will monitor disasters that may affect animals in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. She will assist agencies with their animal disaster planning; work with local authorities to set up temporary animal shelters; train new EARS volunteers; and network with law enforcement, emergency management and animal control agencies throughout the region.

Wellman is a professional pet sitter, a member of the Indiana Horse Council, and a foster parent and former board member for Kentuckiana Pug Rescue. She is a former police, ambulance and fire dispatcher and helps plan educational programs for the annual Hoosier Horse Fair and Expo in Indianapolis, the largest, all volunteer-run expo in North America.

“After seeing how the animals left behind during Hurricane Katrina suffered, I became compelled to educate people about disaster planning and preparedness,” Wellman said. “I don’t believe people think about the issue until  a disaster or emergency actually happens, and by then it is usually too late.”

“Diann’s background in hands-on animal care and first aid, particularly with large animals, will make our animal disaster response team, which is already the best in the nation, even stronger,” said EARS National Director Kay Mayfield. “Our EARS regional directors are all dedicated volunteers and compassionate animal lovers, and Diann is no exception.”

With more than 3,000 EARS volunteers in the United States and Canada, including nine regional directors, EARS can assist when natural or human-caused disasters put animals at risk and overwhelm local animal care agencies. In the fall of 2005, 435 EARS volunteers from 40 states and Canada participated in UAN’s Hurricane Katrina relief effort, caring for more than 2,100 animals at six locations in three states.
