- From Kauai Humane Society: Red Cross is mandated to accept pets at ALL shelters. All animals MUST be in a crate.
- Emergency Shelter Information from Hawaiian Humane Society:
- In light of the potential threat of Hurricane Lane, the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Adoption Center will be closed on Thursday, August 23 and Friday, August 24. For pet emergencies, please call 356-2250 or dial 911. Click here for a list of emergency shelters near you. Remember, if it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for your pet.
- Their website states that pet owners evacuating to an emergency shelter need an ID tag for their dog, as well as a collar, leash, and a two-week supply of food and medications. They also suggest listening to radio and television broadcasts to find out if your nearest shelter will be open.

- From Kauai Humane Society: Red Cross is mandated to accept pets at ALL shelters. All animals MUST be in a crate.
From Honolulu Star Advertiser: Twenty shelters are being set up throughout Oahu with the help of the American Red Cross Hawaii chapter. The shelters are to be used as a last resort for people seeking protection from high winds and flying debris, said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. If safe to do so, people should shelter in their homes, or stay with family and friends, he said.
All 20 evacuation shelters on Oahu accept pets. The shelters will open at 10 a.m. Thursday. They are:

- Kauai Humane Society – 3-825 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue, HI 96766
- Provides a pets-only evacuation shelter for dogs, cats, and small animals. There are requirements for each pet and space is available on a first come, first serve basis — no reservations.
- From Facebook page: *Unfortunately, KHS is completely full and cannot take in additional pets. KHS has a limited amount of crates, food/kitty litter and blankets to provide those in need of these items. It is a first come, first serve. KHS is open normal business hours today 11am-5pm.

The Hawaiian Humane Society is a designated first responder and partners with the Department of Emergency Management to assist in disaster planning and response. Emergency shelters are in-part staffed by Hawaiian Humane volunteers as a public service and more volunteers are needed. We are also in need of on-campus volunteers to assist as the storm approaches.
